How old is too old?

So, I've been having a lot of thoughts about how old is too old to trick or treat. I told My 12 year old, that this year he was in fact too old. Nothing drives me more crazy than to have all of my kids in the house on Halloween evening only to have to continue to open the door to a bunch of teenagers, with pillowcases and no costumes on. There is just a point when you say enough is enough. I figured that this year was it. He turned 12, started Jr. High, started going to Young Mens and we gave him a later bed time. I just figured that this was a good time to call trick or treating quits too.
He was obviously disappointed, until we promised to buy him a bunch of candy and that he could have some friends over for a party. That seemed to make him happy and he appeared to be happy with the alternative.
But as I've been talking to parents about it over the past week. I've had several parents who seem very surprised that I wasn't allowing him to go out trick or treating. I guess in return, I was surprised at how many parents still let their 12 and 13 year olds go out.
What do you think? I am curious what others think about teenagers trick or treating and when you think it's time to say they are too old.

I think you picked a natural stopping point. You also gave him a great alternative which I KNOW he enjoyed. I don't want my kids out wandering aimlessly when they get to a certain age. Remember that last group of teens with the scantily clad girls in it? Yeah, I so don't want my boy out there like THAT.

Besides, there is still Trunk-or-Treat where nobody cares if the teens want candy too. It's not a one or the other thing- he can have both.

By the way, I think your scones and hot chocolate rest stop idea is going to be cropping up in the neighborhoods of some of my blog friends next year. Even on the blog people think it was a great idea- you are the party Queen!

You're right. I let him do the trunk or treat so he got candy then.

The scone/hot chocolate was-I think- your idea, not mine. But it was a great one. Just next year we buy more dough! YUM!

I can't say too much on this subject. I went trick or treating the first year I was married. I still had friends in high school and they wanted us to come. We always dressed up and if they said we were too old we just went to the next house. Looking back it was silly but I have never followed any rules :)
