This is really kind of a gross subject for me. I hate toes! Really! I think feet are yucky, unless they are cute baby feet that are not walking yet. Only then do I touch them, or hold them or tickle them. I don't even touch my own feet.
Then there are the toe nails. Cutting toe nails is not one of my strengths. I put it off on my boys as long as I can get away with it, because of course I'd have to touch their dirty little feet. So...this is where we get into my problem.
A few weeks ago, Tyler came to me, crying that he had hurt his toe. In fact, he was running around bare foot, and snagged one of his toe nails on something and pulled it back to the point that it was bleeding. So, the all knowing mother that I am. I grabbed a bandage and a baggie full of ice. Then my job was done. Or so I thought.
Over the next few weeks he constantly would tell me that his toe still hurt, and most of the time, I would just tell him I was sorry and move to my next project. After all, it was no longer bleeding and eventually, I thought, it would stop hurting.
Well, 3 or 4 days ago, he climbed up on my bed while I was sitting there reading and complained yet again about this toe. So, - for probably the first time since the accident- I really looked at it, and was shocked at what I saw.
(pause for the presentation of the mother of the year award!!----Applause!)
His toe nail is hanging by a thread. Most of it has completely detached. Yet, there is a small thread in the nail bed that has not detached. I don't know what to do. I tried to move it to see if it would come off, and he screamed. So over the last few days we are just keeping a bandage wrapped tightly around it so that it will not move.
Any suggestions? I'm thinking that I may have to take him to the doctor, but honestly I don't want to pay $25 for them to say "yep, give it a few days...it'll fall off".
I've thought about cutting it down to the stub, but he freaks out at even the suggestion.
It's shocking that I have actually been raising boys for nearly 12 years and this is our first toe nail incident. And for the first time I truly do not know what to do.
So any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm slightly worried that if I leave it there, the new nail may not grow back. But I really have no idea.

Justin has lost a few toe nails in our marriage (most are related to church basketball). One time he actually crushed his toe bone and to fix it they had to remove the toe nail. They then sewed the toe nail back on to help the new nail grow. I know you are saying what. But then other times it has just fallen off and the new nail grew also. So basically we have done both, kept the nail on and removed it and they both worked out fine. Good Luck!
I have no idea...sorry. But this post made me cringe...I hate feet, but nail things hurt so bad.
Good luck
We had something similar happen a week or two ago - but probably not quite as low.
I ended up clipping off everything I could, because it hurt him so much if the nail that was hanging was pulled at all.
Good luck!
