Playing Hooky

Friday we decided to play hooky from all that was responsible. Steve took the day off work, and the boys skipped school, and we went skiing.

It was Tyler's first time. He had seen us all going skiing for the last couple of years, and really felt slighted. When I took the twins, back in December, he saw the ski's in the car when we got home and threw a fit. He didn't understand why I wouldn't take him with us, and why he had to be the littlest in the family. I realized then, that the next time we went, he would have to come too.

So...I took the leap and took my almost 5 year old skiing. He couldn't quite figure out the "pizza" as we called the wedge, but totally enjoyed riding on the lift. Whenever I would let go of him, and send him on his way, he would end up crashing or falling down and would tell me over and over that "skiing really isn't fun". But when I would suggest going to sit in the lodge he would say, "no I want to go on the lift again." So, I spent the entire day skiing down the mountain holding Tyler under the arms, with him between my legs (It's a really good thing that I've been working out lately, because otherwise I think it would have killed my back. But my only pains at the end of the day, were my calves and my biceps. yay me!!)

We were worried about Chase at first. When we first got on the mountain, he seemed to forget everything he learned last year. I was afraid that I was going to have to carry him down the hill as well, but luckily as soon as we got him to the top, everything clicked and he was a skiing fool!! He went down over and over, and even started mastering turning as well, by the end of the day. Which is good considering running into things head on, is not the wisest way to ski.

In our family, we still live by the old 'Better off Dead' way of skiing. "Go that way, really fast. If something gets in your way...Turn!" It seems to work, and you know what they say...If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

The other boys were great sports. They weren't necessarily happy that they had to spend the entire day on the bunny slope. But took advantage of seeing how many times they could ride the lift, and race to the bottom. Steve and I both took a turn taking them on some more challenging (and scenic) trails, but for the most part they just went down over and over, faster and faster, trying to perfect the skills that they have.

It was a fabulous day...We all had a great time.

Ya, I really don't like skiing when it's crowded, so we stick with weekdays. We just don't have anymore days off until spring break, and I was worried that with all of this warm weather, it could be too slushy by then.
Michelle, next time we go, you can come too. I'll hold you under the arms and ski down the hill. I wont let go though, because that's when Tyler would crash and tell me it wasn't fun. :-)
